Monks in Luang Prabang LaosIndochina Route Map Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia had long been on our list of mysterious, intriguing, must-see countries when we finally visited there in 2012.  This is truly an exotic land, with each country rich in its own unique culture, beautiful landscape, and storied history.

We started our journey in Luang Prabang, Laos, where we quickly became immersed in local tradition, awaking each morning at sunrise to experience the spiritual alms collection of hundreds of monks orange-robed.  The openness of the Laotian people was inspiring, from sitting and talking with curious young monks, to visiting the villages and homes of welcoming hill town tribespeople.  Our cameras were met with ready and genuine smiles at every turn.

We overnighted aboard a small junk on Halong Bay, a breathtaking gem of a location.  Then we went on to spend two weeks traveling through Vietnam.  A highlight for us there was colorful Hoi An, a World Heritage site that was an important trading port for Vietnam in the 1600’s.  Our final week was spent visiting the surreal Angkor region of Cambodia, an other-worldly area of nearly 100 mystical temple ruins that was once the land of the flourishing Khmer Empire from the 9th to 15th centuries.

From ancient kingdoms to the bustling vibrancy of modern life, this region of the world has it all.   And the warmth of the people along with the visual and spiritual treasures make this a must-see location for any world traveler.
